In March 2024, a new MOZART® 3D Tomosynthesis specimen imaging system of KUBTEC Medical Imaging was installed at Dorset County Hospital.

One of the surgeons, Mr Tomaz Graja (pictured below), Consultant Breast Oncoplastic and General Surgeon, commented “We quickly got used to using this fantastic diagnostic imaging system. The quality of the images is excellent and there are various ways of looking at the specimen image like K-view, the ability to blend the image with the high-resolution photo image. The voice control is a helpful feature. Obviously, the main advantage is 3D Tomosynthesis, which gives us a lot of information about the extent of the cancer and its margins. It is particularly helpful for monitoring micro calcifications and parenchyma architecture of the affected area. I highly enjoy using this state-of the-art device for our breast cancer patients and thank the Synapse Medical team configuring the system to meet our needs.”

The power of the MOZART® system lies in its ability to enable surgeons during surgery to precisely see the margins of the tissue removed. This allows surgeons to better determine whether some cancer is still present in the breast (known as a “positive margin”), and therefore whether to remove more tissue or not. Without MOZART®, the surgeon might not get an accurate view of the margins until after the surgery, potentially leading to a patient being called back for a repeat surgery.
